19 21-28, Dec 25, 2003The Ohara Shell Mound belonging to the Nara period is situated on the old dune of Onahama Bay in the southeastern part of Tohoku region. Only the salt-making potteries and shells were found in 1968 at the site. The salt-making potteries are cylindrical in form, and this type of pottery is distributed over Ibaragi and Miyagi Prefectures. The development of the Nara and Heian period-salt-making pottery in these areas is thought to have been related to the political situation of these days.
