本稿は、ハーマン・メルヴィル（Herman Melville）による『白鯨』（ Moby-Dick ）（l85l）の中で描かれる鳥に注目し、その役割を考察するものである。この作品内の鳥が描かれる場面を考察すると、鳥には不穏な雰囲気や不吉な予兆がつきまとう。特に、白く美しいアルバトロスは本来吉兆を示す鳥であるが、『白鯨』においては死や恐怖の表象として描かれている。不吉で陰鬱な雰囲気の中で飛び交う鳥たちは、白鯨との闘いの中でピークオッド号に襲い掛っていく。さらに物語が進むにつれて、鳥のイメージはピークオッド号の船員たちに重ねられる。イシュメールは鳥のように「止まり木 (perch)」から、不気味な船アルバトロス号を見下ろす。また白鯨との闘いに興奮したエイハブは、鳥のような声を出し、「止まり木 (perch)」に登っていく。ついにはピークオッド号の船自体がアルバトロスに喩えられ、白鯨を追跡する。最後の場面でみゆくピークオッド号は、先住民タシュテゴに打ち付けられた “sky-hawk” という鳥と共に海に消える。この小説の冒頭で、先住民の赤ん坊が鷲に連れ去られた伝説が語られるが、この物語自体も鳥が伴う伝説で始まり、鳥が伴う伝説で終わりを迎えるのである。『白鯨』の中で、多くの円環が存在するように、その円環の中に不吉な予兆を示す鳥たちも含まれていることを例証するのが、本稿の目的である。 This paper examines the role o5 birds in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick (l85l). Birds have inauspicious connotations in the novel, especially the albatross which is depicted as a bringer o5 sorrow despite its traditional reputation as a bird o5 both beauty and good 5ortune. Birds attack the crew o5 the Pequod in the battle against the white whale, leading Ishmael, Ahab and the others to associate them with bad 5ortune. Moreover, Ismael stands in his perch like a bird, Ahab also cries like a bird, and even the Pequod is said to chase a5ter the Moby-Dick like an albatross. In the 5irst hal5 o5 Moby-Dick , Ishmael recounts a 5olktale in which an eagle carries o55 and kills an indigenous baby, and in the 5inal scene, the Pequod sinks with the native Tashtego and a “sky-hawk”. This is one example o5 the symmetrical balance, or circularity o5 the novel, and indicates that birds are included also in the structural circle that comprises the novel.
